Technology

The three-dimensional aquisition technology of the scanners of Maestro line, belongs to the class of techniques of the structured light projection triangulation. The structured light projection is the evolution to the whole field of the techniques based on laser. Infact, the structured light acquires in parallel millions of points too, when the lasers compose the point cloud, through the acquisition of single points or profiles. The time of a misuration is very reduced, few seconds depending on scanner resolution. The structured light uses the projection of incoherent light stripes that the object of interest deforms, according to the shape of its surface. The elaboration of images, which contains the deformation of the stripes, allows to extract the piece of information on the object shape. The result of the scan is a depth image, also known as range image or range map, that contains the coordinates of points and possibly also their colour.

Advantages

  • Non contact aquisition - The measure is performed in a not invasive way, without physical contact with the object to scan. Unlike the tracing systems, the structured light technology does not enter in contact with the surface of the object, avoiding many problems related to the aquisition of particularly delicate or deformable objects.

  • Speed of acquisition - The structured light projection allows the acquisition of hundred thousand of points in a few seconds.

  • Security - The structured light technology does not use any laser. The light used is that of a normal halogen lamp. There is no danger to measure body human parts as, for example, the faces.

  • Resolution and details - The density of acquired information allows to measure in natural manner even the more delicate details of the surface, with a resolution of few cents of millimeter.

  • Colour - The colour information is associated at the measured points.

The process of tridimensional scan

The term 3D scanning (3D photography, automatic 3D acquisition) means the creation of a digital three-dimensional model that faithfully represents the characteristics of shape and color of a 3D object. The 3D digital model is an accurate description of the surface of the object under examination. The process of creation of the 3D digital model constists on the aquisition of partial descriptions of the object from more points of view (rangemap) and in to merge the piece of information in an unique digital model alone, consituited by a cloud of points or, more commonly, by a set of triangles. The object or the scanner are freely moved and the coherent reference system is recovered through advanced 3D elaboration techniques of automatic type or based on the shape of the object. It is important to remark that digital 3D models created with the 3D scanning technology are not images or image sequences: the model describes in a faithful and misurable way the surface of the real represented object.
